DIY ~ Homemade Hot Cocoa Favors

Beat the winter chill with a warm and cozy Hot Cocoa Party!

We've shared lots of fun ideas for this party theme over on the website, and recommended handing out these super cute little jars of homemade hot cocoa to your guests as party favors.

They'd also make great (and inexpensive) gifts for neighbors, teachers, and friends.

Here's how to make them.  You'll need:

Small jars
2 cups nonfat dry milk
1 cup powdered sugar
1/2 cup cocoa
1/2 cup non-dairy creamer
Marshmallows, optional
Mini chocolate chips, optional
Crushed peppermint candies, optional

This amount of ingredients yielded 4 small jars for me.  Adjust the amounts based on the number of jars you'd like to make.

Divide the amounts of each ingredient by the number of jars that you'll be making and begin layering the ingredients in your jars using a funnel.  Try to vary it a bit for visual interest.

I recommend that you sift the cocoa powder before you add it because it tends to be clumpy and makes a bumpy layer when unsifted.

Another tip, the cocoa powder leaves a "cloud" on the sides of the jars.  Use a dry napkin or cotton swab to wipe down the sides of the jars before adding the next ingredients.

Keep layering ingredients until your jars are full, then top with marshmallows, chocolate chips, and/or peppermints.

You'll end up with pretty little jars that look like this:

Like the "Cocoa to Go" tags?

They're available in our brand new shop, and are sold together with instruction tags.

The entire Hot Cocoa Party Printable Collection is available as a set and includes these labels, as well as invitations, party straw flags, party toppers, folding tent labels, an 8 x 10 art print and colorful cup sleeves ~ all for 50% off of what the items would cost if purchased separately.

A great deal!  Check it out here, and enjoy your hot cocoa!

Friends + Chocolate = Wonderfulness!

DIY ~ Paper Napkin Table Runner

I've been chomping at the bit to share this paper napkin table runner tutorial with you today!

It is seriously so incredibly easy and inexpensive to make...we're talking $5 or less, depending on what you have on hand!

You are going to be blown away by how easy this is.  Literally, minutes is all you need to put it together, and the results are adorable.

This idea is awesome for several reasons...yes it's easy and affordable, but you can customize it to match your decor, and it's super easy clean-up...especially for a kids' table!

I created this runner for a Cookie Decorating Party and it couldn't have been a better idea.

No worries about stains and spills, just throw the napkin runner in the trash after the party!

Here's what you'll need:

  • Napkins of your choice (I picked up 3 packs of different colors at the dollar store)
  • Ribbon of your choice (pick up a spool or two or use whatever you have on hand)
  • Scotch tape
  • Double-sided tape
Now, just lay your napkins out on a table and create your pattern.

Secure with Scotch tape...

Flip it over, and using double-sided tape, place ribbon to cover the seams.

That is it!  I told you it was easy!

If you want to add a little pizzazz, feel free.  I attached some cute little snowflakes to each corner to tie into our theme.

And here it is in action:

Isn't that adorable?

And how cute is that little favor box?  You could win that, and lots of other goodies for FREE in a giveaway that we're hosting right now with Nikki, in Stitches and The Sewing Loft!

Halloween ~ Gettin' Crafty With Martha!

We typically go all-out on Halloween at our house, and each year we try to do something a little different .

Martha Stewart's Halloween books are always one of my fave go-to resources for inspiration, and people are always raving about what we create.

Here's a little stroll down memory lane, that may just inspire you to create some spooky fun of your own this year.  :)

Halloween Crafts with Cardstock

These cardstock spooky owls stood guard at our front door.

I used glow-in-the-dark crepe paper for their eyes for an extra creepy effect.
They were awesome!

Spray paint a few branches black and you've got yourself some super easy Halloween decor!

These guys continued to haunt our party area inside.

I tucked them into the scene-setter "woods" adhered to our wall, and their glowing eyes and white brows gave just the right effect.

We used a blacklight and it looked great!

I spent A LOT of time cutting out dozens of mice for this project, only to find out that Martha now sells these little critters!

While I love the way they turned out, next time I would definitely spend the $4 and buy them.  (You can get yours here).

We had a party in our basement, and the staircase leading upstairs was dark...only lit with a string of blacklights.

This was perfect, because all you could see were the shadowed silhouettes of the mice and they looked real!  They were a definite conversation piece.

Check out this cool pic that my hubby snapped, which happened to catch our kitty cat looking like he just enjoyed a "mice" meal.  :)

Such a funny pic!

Getting Crafty with Paper Towels

You may remember this picture from our Black Light Party.

This "head waiter" was featured in Martha's Halloween book last year and I just thought it was so cool!

It's just a head form covered in coffee-stained paper towels.  Isn't it neat?

When we discovered that tonic water glows in black light, this table set-up just seemed like the perfect idea.

I used Martha's same coffee-stained paper towel idea and transformed my son and his friend into absolutely amazing mummies!

They looked so good they were barely recognizable!

They sat on our porch and handed out candy that year, and it is still probably our most talked out trick-or-treat night ever.

Neighbors kept coming back to our house over and over just to see these guys.

No one could tell if they were real and they gave some pretty good scares that night.

Such fun!

I don't know about you, but this has definitely put me in the Halloween spirit!

I hope it's inspired you to create some Halloween fun of your own.

Happy Crafting!  :)

They're actually party favors with a surprised hidden inside!

How cool is that?  Wicked cool, right?

And you can use different papers and embellishments to customize them any way you want to.
So fun!
